The Assembly of the Republic.
Known in Portuguese as the Assembleia da República, Parliament is one of Portugal’s sovereign bodies. Its members are elected by direct, universal and secret suffrage.
The Assembly represents the whole country, including Portuguese communities abroad. Its work connects public debate, democratic representation and the laws that shape everyday life.

Representation. Legislation. Scrutiny.
Parliament debates and adopts legislation, considers the State Budget, and scrutinises the Government and public administration. Parliamentary committees examine subjects in detail and contribute to this work.
The Constitution, Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, and the Members’ Statute establish the Assembly’s powers and how it works.
